Statoil gets Carmen green light

Statoil has been given the go-ahead from Norway’s Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) to drill an exploration well on the Carmen prospect in the Norwegian Sea.

The PSA said today that the well would be drilled in Block 6507/8 at Haltenbanken.

The well site lies 222km west of Brønnøysund in Nordland County and 10km northeast of the Heidrun field.

A pilot well will be drilled first down to 800m (2,625ft) to evaluate if there is shallow gas in the area.

The water depth at the well is 358m (1,175ft). Drilling is estimated to last for 18 days and will start in mid-June.

The well is to be drilled by Deepsea Bergen semi-submersible rig, which is owned and operated by Odfjell Drilling.
